Grapes are high in a number of powerful antioxidant compounds. In fact, over 1,600 beneficial plant compounds have been identified in this fruit (5Trusted Source, 6Trusted Source). The highest concentration of antioxidants is found in the skin and seeds. For this reason, most of the research on grapes has been done using seed or skin extracts (7Trusted Source). Red grapes contain higher numbers of antioxidants due to the anthocyanins that give them their color (5Trusted Source).
The antioxidants in grapes remain present even after fermentation, which is why red wine is also high in these compounds (8Trusted Source). One of the antioxidants in this fruit is resveratrol, which is classified as a polyphenol. Numerous studies have been performed on its benefits, showing that resveratrol protects against heart disease, lowers blood sugar and protects against the development of cancer (9Trusted Source). Grapes also contain vitamin C, beta-carotene, quercetin, lutein, lycopene and ellagic acid, which are powerful antioxidants as well (6Trusted Source), as previously noted.
Also according to animal studies, the antioxidants in blueberries may affect areas of your brain that are essential for intelligence (23Trusted Source, 24Trusted Source). They appear to benefit aging neurons, leading to improvements in cell signaling. Human studies have also yielded promising results. In one of these studies, nine older adults with mild cognitive impairment consumed blueberry juice every day. After 12 weeks, they experienced improvements in several markers of brain function (25Trusted Source). Here Brocky Wilson, Food.news, explores polyphenois in grapes and blueberries cutting your mental age:
“Here’s another good reason to eat more grapes and blueberries: Both of these superfoods are rich in anti-aging nutrients that help keep your memory sharp as you age.
That’s according to a study from French and Canadian researchers, who found that a polyphenol extract from grapes and blueberries helps cut the “mental age” of the elderly. This means they’re aging healthily and their brains work at a level comparable to what’s seen in younger people.
Grape and blueberry extract linked to better memory
Polyphenols are a group of compounds found naturally in plants. They include flavonoids, phenolic acids, lignans and stilbenes. These nutrients have antioxidant and other beneficial properties that can protect against diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s dementia.
Past studies show that polyphenols in berries can halt age-related cognitive decline. With that in mind, the researchers examined the effect of a polyphenol-rich extract from grapes and blueberries on the memory of elderly adults.
To that end, they recruited participants between the ages of 60 and 70 who ate a diet with a moderate amount of polyphenols. They defined moderate polyphenol consumption as two or less servings of red fruit a week, a cup or less of tea a day or less than 140 grams of dark chocolate a week.
For six months, some of the participants took a grape and blueberry supplement that contained 258 mg of flavonoids twice a day. Meanwhile, others took a placebo that contained no flavonoid over the same time period.”
